The same mountains-from-the-sea as Lofoten with a fraction of the traffic, plus the finest day walk in Norway on the rest day.
The operator runs this on the weeks below. Other dates are not available.
Vesterålen is the run of islands immediately north of Lofoten, with the same vertical mountain-meets-sea geography and a fraction of the visitors. This is a week riding a loop out of Sortland, taking in the restored fishing village of Nyksund, abandoned in the 1970s and brought back to life from the 1980s by a group of artists, along with the open Atlantic coast around Bø and the bird and whale country of the Vesterålen sounds.
The riding is moderate by Norwegian standards, around 245 kilometres over five days with the longest at 64 kilometres, and most days come with shorter and longer variants so you can read the weather and your legs before setting off. The set piece is not on the bike at all: the rest day at Nyksund is built around the Dronningruta, a 15 kilometre ridge walk to Stø that was voted the finest single day of walking in Norway. We arrange it self-guided through a long-standing Norwegian partner, with luggage moved between hotels, the route loaded into a navigation app, and the closing RIB transfer from Ringstad to Stokmarknes included.
A sensible choice for any regular cyclist who wants island scenery without the long back-to-back days, and who likes a good ridge walk built into the week. The rhythm is closer to the South Downs Way than to anything alpine: rolling, unhurried, and never quite out of sight of the sea.
You arrive in Sortland - the working center of Vesterålen, known locally as Den blå byen ("the blue town") for the house-painting tradition that turned the central streetscape blue in the early 2000s. The afternoon is your own; the harbour and the small Sortland Bridge viewpoint are within walking distance of the central hotel.

Most travellers add a night or two at the start or end. We arrange these through the same operator network with the same single line of contact - write to us with your preference and we will fold it into your enquiry.

Add to my enquiry →Cycling season runs roughly May to September. Coastal regions are mild but wet; inland is drier and warmer. Long daylight hours mean you can ride well into the evening.

We refer you to one of our long-standing Norwegian partners who runs this journey. The booking, the contract, the prepayment and the consumer protection (under Norway's Reisegarantifondet) sit with the operator. The price is the same as booking the operator directly; we are paid a small referral commission and there is no additional cost to you.
Yes. The standard itinerary is the most-walked or most-cycled version, but the operator routinely runs slower variants, longer stays at specific lodges, or extensions in Oslo, Bergen or other gateway cities. Tell us what you have in mind in the first conversation.
For high season (June through August), we recommend committing at least three to four months ahead. The lodges are small and book out a season in advance. Shoulder seasons (May, September) are typically more flexible.
No. We strongly recommend booking comprehensive travel and cancellation insurance separately, ideally at the time of booking the trip. The operator can suggest Norwegian providers if useful.

Three regions, three different trips. Lofoten is Arctic islands at sea level. Jotunheimen is the high alpine country with the DNT lodge network. Hardangervidda is the open plateau. Here is the comparison we wish someone had written first.

Inntravel, Exodus, Headwater. Three serious British operators with some Norway range. What each does well, where each falls short, and where our curator model sits next to them.

July is not always the right answer. September sometimes is. Here is the regional, month-by-month version, written for a walker with one good week and a strong preference for being told the truth.
