Three mountain lodges across Jotunheimen, walked lodge to lodge with your bags sent ahead, and a roped glacier crossing on the last morning to the top of Norway.
Jotunheimen holds every Norwegian peak above 2,300 metres, and the walking here has a different character from the rest of the country: less forest, more rock, and glaciers still working on the valleys. This week crosses part of it on foot, from Leirvassbu in the west to Juvasshytta on its high plateau, and finishes on Galdhopiggen at 2,469 metres, the highest point in northern Europe.
The lodges are the other half of it. Leirvassbu, Spiterstulen and Juvasshytta are working mountain lodges rather than hotels, and they have been taking walkers for well over a century. Juvasshytta sits at 1,840 metres with nothing above it but the mountain. Bags move between them by vehicle, so the walking days are carried in a day pack.
The summit day is guided and roped, because the standard route from Juvasshytta crosses the Styggebrean glacier. The equipment comes with the guide. A Norwegian operator runs the week with a coach from Oslo at each end, stopping in Lom on the way up for long enough to see the stave church.
Coach north from Oslo with a two and a half hour stop in Lom, long enough for the stave church and lunch.
Leirvassbu stands at the head of its own lake with Kyrkja rising behind it, and is the base for the first two nights.

No. The crossing of Styggebrean is roped and led by a guide, and the glacier equipment is provided. You need to be fit enough for a long day at altitude and steady on your feet.
Yes. Juvasshytta is the base for both nights, so you can stay put or walk locally on the plateau while the group goes up.
1,840 metres, which makes it one of the highest lodges in Norway reachable by road. Expect cold mornings even in July.
Working mountain lodges: simple, warm, good food, and shared facilities in places. Spiterstulen and Leirvassbu have been taking walkers since the 1800s.

Three regions, three different trips. Lofoten is Arctic islands at sea level. Jotunheimen is the high alpine country with the DNT lodge network. Hardangervidda is the open plateau. Here is the comparison we wish someone had written first.

Eight properties - and the architectural philosophy behind them - that are remaking what a remote Norwegian stay looks like.

Why the Sunnmøre Alps, the Lyngen peninsula and Jotunheimen reward the patient walker more than the lift-pass crowd.
