The journey
One bed all week, a guide every walking day.
Most walking weeks in Jotunheimen move you from lodge to lodge. This one does not. Gronolen Fjellgard sits above Lake Bygdin at the southern gate of the national park, and you stay there all five nights, driving out each morning with a local guide and coming back to the same room. For anyone who finds the packing and repacking of a route walk tiresome, that is the whole argument.
The four walking days build. Marabotthornet first, 300 metres of climbing on a clear trail with Bygdin opening below. Then Bitihorn, sharper and airier, up the Tyskestigen and down the stepped Bithodntroppe. Synshorn on the third day is gentler and ends at the family seter on Vinstervatn, where lunch is rommegrot, cured meat and a homemade cake. The last day is Besseggen by the old Jo Gjende shortcut: 1,100 metres of ascent, six to eight hours, and a section that gains 400 metres in 300 of horizontal distance.
The farm has been in the same family for generations and was renovated recently without being smoothed out. Dinner is three courses. The guides are local, the group is small, and the transport to each trailhead is included; only getting yourself to Gronolen is not.

- Not expected. Round up if service was exceptional.

- Norwegian. English is widespread and fluent - you will not need a phrasebook.
- Tap water
- Some of the cleanest in the world. Refill, do not buy bottled.
Typical conditions
Norwegian summer days are long and the light lasts late. Expect mixed weather even in July: 15-22 °C is typical at lower elevations, with the chance of rain and sub-10 °C days higher up. The weather can change inside an hour - pack for it.
What to pack - for this trip

Underfoot
- Mid-cut waterproof hiking boots, broken in (the single most underpacked item)
- Two pairs of merino hiking socks plus a thin liner pair
Layers
- Merino base layer (long sleeve) - worth more than any single-piece down jacket
- Lightweight fleece or wool mid-layer
- Waterproof shell jacket and trousers (Gore-Tex or equivalent - not a poncho)
- Light puffer for evenings at the lodges
In the daypack
- 25-30 L daypack with a rain cover
- Refillable water bottle (Norwegian tap water is excellent)
- Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen - UV is strong above the treeline
- Buff or light beanie, even in summer

Practical questions
How do I get to Gronolen?
Under your own steam - it is the one part of the week not included. The farm is on the Bygdin road in Valdres, roughly three and a half hours from Oslo by car, and the operator can advise on bus connections.
Is Besseggen compulsory?
No. You are based at the farm all week, so you can sit out any day. Most people who come are aiming for it, and the first three days are pitched to prepare you.
What is rommegrot?
Sour cream porridge, served warm with cured meat alongside. It is seter food, made where the summer dairying happened, and the lunch on day four is at the family's own seter by Vinstervatn.
How large is the group?
Small, and guided throughout by local guides who walk these routes through the season. There are no fixed departure weeks: you propose the dates you want inside the July to August season and the operator confirms them.
