The journey

Iconic Lofoten end to end.

This is a self-guided cycling expedition along the spine of the Lofoten archipelago, from the working town of Svolvær on Austvågøy to the famous fishing village of Reine on Moskenesøya at the far western end. Lofoten is what most people picture when they think of northern Norway: jagged granite peaks rising abruptly from the sea, wooden fisherman's rorbuer painted in their characteristic brick red, and a coastline that has been worked for cod for over a thousand years.

The route is around 150 kilometers of cycling spread across four moving days, with rest and exploration days built in at each main base. The terrain is rolling rather than alpine - Lofoten's cycling road sticks largely to the coast - but the wind off the open Atlantic can be a serious factor in either direction. The schedule deliberately allows you to experience either the midnight sun (June through mid-July, when the sun does not set) or the start of the aurora season (from late August onward).

We arrange the trip through one of our long-standing Norwegian partners. Luggage is moved between hotels by support vehicle, the route is laid out in a navigation app with GPX tracks, and rental bikes (hybrid or e-bike) can be added for the full week. The standout overnight is Reine Rorbuer at the end of the route - converted traditional fisherman's cabins on stilts above the harbour, with the Reinebringen ridge rising directly behind them.

Is this for you?

Who this trip is - and isn't - for.

A good fit if
  • Cyclists comfortable with riding days of 40-55 km on rolling coastal roads, with a serious wind exposure factor
  • Travelers drawn to the headline scenery of northern Norway and willing to share the road with summer tourist traffic in places
  • Couples or small groups of friends comfortable with the self-guided rhythm and built-in rest days
  • Anyone who wants either the midnight sun (June) or the early aurora window (late August onward)
Less good fit
  • ·Cyclists looking for traffic-free riding - the main Lofoten road carries summer tourist coaches
  • ·Travelers without their own bike who want road-bike-quality riding (rentals are hybrid or e-bike)
  • ·Anyone uncomfortable with the practicality of two nights in converted rorbuer with shared common spaces

Ways to extend or shape this trip.

Many guests fold an extra night or two into a journey of this kind, or ask the operator to add a guided day or a private transfer. Mention any of the below in your request and we will fold them into the operator quote.

  • Extra night in Bodø before the ride
    Bodø · 1 night

A quiet evening on the Bodø waterfront before the early ferry to Svolvær. Sensible if you are arriving on a long-haul flight or want to walk the Bodø harbour in good light.

Arriving from a long-haul flight or wanting an unhurried start.

  • Extra night in Tromsø after the ride
    Tromsø · 1 night

Round the trip off with a slow day in Tromsø: the cathedral, the cable car, dinner at one of the small Arctic-coast kitchens we list separately.

What to pack - for this trip

The five-to-seven things most travelers underpack for a Norwegian cycling week.

On the bike
  • Padded cycling shorts (two pairs) - by far the most underpacked item
  • Cycling gloves with light padding
  • Lightweight, breathable base layer (long and short sleeve)
Weatherproofing
  • Waterproof cycling jacket (breathable; not a plastic poncho)
  • Waterproof overshoes or quick-drying shoes - Norwegian rain is real
  • Light windproof gilet for descents
Off the bike
  • One pair of comfortable evening trousers and a warm layer for the lodges
  • Sunscreen and lip balm - long days under high-latitude sun
  • A small dry bag for valuables

The operator sends a complete packing list 6 weeks before departure, tailored to your specific dates and the forecast.
