The journey

The quieter islands north of Lofoten.

This is a self-guided cycling week through Vesterålen - the quieter island country immediately north of Lofoten, with the same vertical mountain-meets-sea geography but a fraction of the international visitor traffic. The route runs as a loop out of Sortland, taking in the historic and recently restored fishing village of Nyksund (abandoned in the 1970s and resettled by an international group of artists from the 1980s on), the wide-open Atlantic-facing coast around Bø, and the bird and whale country of the Vesterålen sounds.

The cultural anchor of the trip is the Dronningruta walking trail (the Queen's Route) - a 15 km panoramic ridge walk between Nyksund and Stø, voted the finest day walk in Norway in 2012. The trip's rest day at Nyksund is built around it. The cycling itself is moderate by Norwegian standards (around 245 km across five riding days, with the longest at 64 km), with several variants of different length on each riding day depending on the weather and the legs.

We arrange the trip through one of our long-standing Norwegian partners. Luggage is moved between hotels by support vehicle, the route is laid out in a navigation app with GPX tracks, and the RIB boat transfer between Ringstad and Stokmarknes on the closing day is included.

What to pack - for this trip

The five-to-seven things most travelers underpack for a Norwegian cycling week.

On the bike
  • Padded cycling shorts (two pairs) - by far the most underpacked item
  • Cycling gloves with light padding
  • Lightweight, breathable base layer (long and short sleeve)
Weatherproofing
  • Waterproof cycling jacket (breathable; not a plastic poncho)
  • Waterproof overshoes or quick-drying shoes - Norwegian rain is real
  • Light windproof gilet for descents
Off the bike
  • One pair of comfortable evening trousers and a warm layer for the lodges
  • Sunscreen and lip balm - long days under high-latitude sun
  • A small dry bag for valuables

The operator sends a complete packing list 6 weeks before departure, tailored to your specific dates and the forecast.
