The journey

UNESCO mining town to medieval cathedral.

This is a self-guided cycling week through Trøndelag - central Norway - running roughly westward from the historic copper-mining town of Røros to the cathedral city of Trondheim. The route opens with a scenic train journey on the Rørosbanen line, then turns onto the bicycle for four days of riding across mountain, forest and lake country to a final descent into Trondheim along the Selbusjøen lake.

The standout cultural anchors are at either end. Røros is one of Europe's best-preserved 17th-century mining towns and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1980; the entire wooden townscape, including the smelting hut and the iconic Bergstaden church on the hill, is protected. Trondheim, founded in 997 and the medieval capital of Norway, is built around Nidarosdomen - the country's national cathedral and the medieval pilgrimage destination. The middle days cross a South Sami core area where you may well see reindeer herds along the road.

We arrange the trip through one of our long-standing Norwegian partners. The Trondheim-Røros train at the start is included, luggage is moved between hotels by support vehicle, and bicycle rental (hybrid or e-bike) can be added at fixed weekly prices.

Is this for you?

Who this trip is - and isn't - for.

A good fit if
  • Cyclists comfortable with riding days of 49-66 km on quiet country roads with one sustained gentle climb
  • Travelers drawn to the historical bookends - UNESCO Røros and medieval Nidaros - as much as to the cycling
  • Couples, small groups of friends and solo cyclists happy with the self-guided rhythm
  • Anyone who wants a quieter and less-trafficked Norwegian cycling route than the headline fjord ones
Less good fit
  • ·Cyclists wanting the dramatic vertical scenery of fjord Norway - this is upland and forest country
  • ·Travelers needing en-suite four-star accommodation every night - the middle nights are at simpler country inns
  • ·Anyone wanting fully-guided group format with a leader on the road each day

  1. You arrive in Trondheim - the medieval capital of Norway, founded in 997, and now a vital working university city of about 200,000. The afternoon is your own: Nidarosdomen, the great Gothic cathedral built over the burial place of St Olav, is a fifteen-minute walk from the central hotels; Bakklandet, the cluster of restored 18th-century wooden houses on the east bank of the Nidelva river, is the right corner for an evening meal.

What to pack - for this trip

The five-to-seven things most travelers underpack for a Norwegian cycling week.

On the bike
  • Padded cycling shorts (two pairs) - by far the most underpacked item
  • Cycling gloves with light padding
  • Lightweight, breathable base layer (long and short sleeve)
Weatherproofing
  • Waterproof cycling jacket (breathable; not a plastic poncho)
  • Waterproof overshoes or quick-drying shoes - Norwegian rain is real
  • Light windproof gilet for descents
Off the bike
  • One pair of comfortable evening trousers and a warm layer for the lodges
  • Sunscreen and lip balm - long days under high-latitude sun
  • A small dry bag for valuables
