A self-guided cycling week from the UNESCO copper-mining town of Røros, across the South Sami upland of Trøndelag, down to the Nidaros cathedral on the Trondheim fjord.

This is a self-guided cycling week through Trøndelag - central Norway - running roughly westward from the historic copper-mining town of Røros to the cathedral city of Trondheim. The route opens with a scenic train journey on the Rørosbanen line, then turns onto the bicycle for four days of riding across mountain, forest and lake country to a final descent into Trondheim along the Selbusjøen lake.
The standout cultural anchors are at either end. Røros is one of Europe's best-preserved 17th-century mining towns and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1980; the entire wooden townscape, including the smelting hut and the iconic Bergstaden church on the hill, is protected. Trondheim, founded in 997 and the medieval capital of Norway, is built around Nidarosdomen - the country's national cathedral and the medieval pilgrimage destination. The middle days cross a South Sami core area where you may well see reindeer herds along the road.
We arrange the trip through one of our long-standing Norwegian partners. The Trondheim-Røros train at the start is included, luggage is moved between hotels by support vehicle, and bicycle rental (hybrid or e-bike) can be added at fixed weekly prices.
You arrive in Trondheim - the medieval capital of Norway, founded in 997, and now a vital working university city of about 200,000. The afternoon is your own: Nidarosdomen, the great Gothic cathedral built over the burial place of St Olav, is a fifteen-minute walk from the central hotels; Bakklandet, the cluster of restored 18th-century wooden houses on the east bank of the Nidelva river, is the right corner for an evening meal.
Comfortable central hotel close to Nidarosdomen and the Bakklandet wooden houses.
Hotel in the protected UNESCO old town of Røros.
Small country guesthouse in a quiet lakeside village.
Working country hotel in the South Sami core area.
Lakeside hotel in the village famous for the Selbuvotter knitted mittens.
Most travelers add a night or two at the start or end. We arrange these through the same operator network with the same single line of contact - write to us with your preference and we will fold it into your enquiry.

We refer you to one of our long-standing Norwegian partners who runs this journey. The booking, the contract, the prepayment and the consumer protection (under Norway's Reisegarantifondet) sit with the operator. The price is the same as booking the operator directly; we are paid a small referral commission and there is no additional cost to you.
Yes. The standard itinerary is the most-walked or most-cycled version, but the operator routinely runs slower variants, longer stays at specific lodges, or extensions in Oslo, Bergen or other gateway cities. Tell us what you have in mind in the first conversation.
For high season (June through August), we recommend committing at least three to four months ahead. The lodges are small and book out a season in advance. Shoulder seasons (May, September) are typically more flexible.
No. We strongly recommend booking comprehensive travel and cancellation insurance separately, ideally at the time of booking the trip. The operator can suggest Norwegian providers if useful.

Three regions, three different trips. Lofoten is Arctic islands at sea level. Jotunheimen is the high alpine country with the DNT lodge network. Hardangervidda is the open plateau. Here is the comparison we wish someone had written first.

Backroads, Country Walkers, Butterfield & Robinson. Three serious American operators, each with a Norway portfolio. Here is what each does well, what each does less well, and where a curator model fits.
