The journey

The shorter southern half of the Trolløypa.

This is a self-guided cross-country ski week along the southern half of the Trolløypa - the long marked winter route that runs from Rondane to Lillehammer. The trip starts at Venabygdsfjellet at the southern edge of the Rondane massif and traverses around 100 km of upland country across four moving days, finishing in Lillehammer. It is the right format for skiers who want a genuine moving ski week but don't have time for the full nine-day expedition north from Høvringen.

The skiing is rated moderate by Norwegian standards but is real fjell skiing - open plateau and forest at altitudes around 1,000 meters, on a mix of prepared loipe and ungroomed sections. The middle of the week includes one night at the DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) self-service cabin at Vetåbua, which is part of the experience: simple bunk accommodation, food on site, and the right kind of quiet at the heart of the route. The closing day rolls down via sections of the famous Birkebeinerløypa into Lillehammer.

We arrange the trip through one of our long-standing Norwegian partners. Train transfer from Oslo Airport is included, bags move between hotels by support vehicle on most days, and ski rental can be added.

What to pack - for this trip

The five-to-seven things most travelers underpack for a Norwegian ski-touring week.

Skiing kit
  • Touring skis with skins (typically provided by operator - confirm at booking)
  • Avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel (provided on guided trips)
  • Ski boots that you have toured in before - not new for the trip
Layers
  • Heavy merino base layer (top and bottom)
  • Insulated mid-layer (synthetic or down) for breaks
  • Hardshell jacket and trousers - Norwegian winter weather is no joke
  • Spare warm gloves (you will get one wet)
In the pack
  • Insulated water bottle or thermos - plastic bottles freeze
  • Goggles plus sunglasses (high-altitude sun on snow burns fast)
  • Light headlamp for the early starts and late returns

The operator sends a complete packing list 6 weeks before departure, tailored to your specific dates and the forecast.
