A family farm at the southern gate of Jotunheimen, four guided mountain days building toward Besseggen, and a seter lunch in the middle of the week.
This is a centre-based walking week rather than a crossing, which in Britain would be the difference between a bunkhouse week in Torridon and the Cape Wrath Trail. You stay at Gronolen Fjellgard above Lake Bygdin for all five nights, drive out each morning with a local guide, and come back to the same room. Nothing is packed and unpacked.
The four days build deliberately. Marabotthornet is 300 metres of ascent on a clear trail. Bitihorn is sharper, up the Tyskestigen, with real exposure in places. Synshorn is gentler and finishes at the family seter on Vinstervatn, where lunch is rommegrot - sour cream porridge - with cured meat and a homemade cake. The last day is Besseggen by the old Jo Gjende shortcut: 1,100 metres of ascent, six to eight hours, and a section gaining 400 metres in 300 of horizontal distance.
Besseggen is the best-known ridge walk in Norway and busy in high summer; taking it from Jostigen rather than the standard Gjendesheim start avoids the worst of that. Guides are local and the group is small. Getting yourself to Valdres is the one part not included - it is roughly three and a half hours from Oslo by car.
You make your own way to the farm, which sits above Bygdin on the road toward Valdresflye.
A three-course dinner, and an evening walk-through of the week ahead so you know what each day asks of you.

Add to my enquiry →Norwegian summer days are long and the light lasts late. Expect mixed weather even in July: 15-22 °C is typical at lower elevations, with the chance of rain and sub-10 °C days higher up. The weather can change inside an hour - pack for it.

Under your own steam - it is the one part of the week not included. The farm is on the Bygdin road in Valdres, roughly three and a half hours from Oslo by car, and the operator can advise on bus connections.
No. You are based at the farm all week, so you can sit out any day. Most people who come are aiming for it, and the first three days are pitched to prepare you.
Sour cream porridge, served warm with cured meat alongside. It is seter food, made where the summer dairying happened, and the lunch on day four is at the family's own seter by Vinstervatn.
Small, and guided throughout by local guides who walk these routes through the season. There are no fixed departure weeks: you propose the dates you want inside the July to August season and the operator confirms them.

Three regions, three different trips. Lofoten is Arctic islands at sea level. Jotunheimen is the high alpine country with the DNT lodge network. Hardangervidda is the open plateau. Here is the comparison we wish someone had written first.

A British walker who knows their way around the Munros will find a great deal that is familiar in the Norwegian fjell, and a few things that are not. Here is how the two ranges really compare.

Norway has 550 mountain huts run by a 158-year-old federation, opened with a standard key, paid for in a ledger, and largely run on trust. For a British walker used to commercial walking holidays this is a different country. Here is how it actually works.
